Day 151

When Josh and I got engaged (ten years ago this February!) we decided that we wanted to become home owners.  So we skipped the apartment phase and found a little fixer upper that we decided to build our first nest in.  I was only 18 when we got married and didn’t really know much about making a house a home, but I read this scripture one day and it stood out to me.

Proverbs 15:6  There is treasure in the house of the godly…

We began to pray that God would fill our house with treasure.  We wanted to turn the 1300 square feet He had for us into a place we could be proud of.  I studied Pottery Barn catalogs that came in the mail and tried to think of ways to get their look without having to pay their prices.  We spent many hours removing layer upon layer upon layer of horrid wallpaper.  We painted, learned how to use caulk guns, demolished the kitchen, and redesigned the bathroom and after 6 years we got it just the way we wanted it… and then we sold it.  Funny how things work out that way.

When we moved to our new house, we had twice the square footage and it was time to start praying that God would fill our house with treasure again.  I looked for the verse and found it in the amplified version this time.

Proverbs 15:6 In the house of the [uncompromisingly] righteous is great [priceless] treasure, but with the income of the wicked is trouble and vexation.

Priceless.  I never noticed that part before.  In the house of Godly people who don’t compromise there is priceless treasure.  Things that are so valuable you can’t put a price tag on them.  Sure, I was missing a dinging room table and 4 rooms sat completely empty, but I began to see that my house was actually already full of priceless treasure.  It was full of peace, joy, the adorable voice of my one year old son, healthy bodies, a happy marriage, and so many other blessings that you can’t purchase… not even at Pottery Barn.

I began to pray for great and priceless treasure.  I believed for a great dining room table, but I also believed for a priceless daughter.  I got both!  I believed for a great playroom for our kids, but I also believed that priceless laughter would fill that playroom.  I got both!  I’m thankful for our home and how God has filled it with great treasures, but it’s the priceless treasures that complete my life.

“A new heart is better than a new coat.  To feed on Christ is better than to have the best earthly food.  To be an heir of God is better than being the heir of the greatest nobleman.  To have God for our portion is blessed, infinitely more blessed than to own broad acres of land.  God hath blessed us with spiritual blessings.  These are the rarest, the richest, the most enduring of all blessings; they are priceless in value” – Spurgeon
