Day 87

1 Samuel 15:3 Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.

Thus says the Lord of hosts!  That is pretty intense stuff.  The Lord wanted Saul and his armies to utterly destroy the Amalekites.  Even the nursing babies.  I read that this morning and I had to find out what on earth these people had done to deserve this.

Deuteronomy 25:17-19 fills us in. 17 Remember what the Amalekites did to you on your way out of Egypt. 18 You were tired and worn out. They met you on your journey. They attacked everyone who was lagging behind. They didn’t have any respect for God. 19 The Lord your God will give you peace and rest from all of the enemies who are around you. He’ll do it in the land he’s giving you to take over as your very own. Then you will wipe out the memory of the Amalekites from the earth. Don’t forget to do it!

When the Israelites were leaving Egypt the Amalekites attacked them.  For no apparent reason.  And they did it like cowards.  They attacked the people in the back, the people who were weary and weakened.  I’m sure this group of people consisted of the elderly, small children, nursing mothers and their infants.  This infuriated God.  He wanted them wiped out.  He was not going to let them get away with killing innocent, defenseless people.

Precious, innocent, defenseless people being murdered… sounds a lot like abortion to me.  God was not okay with the Amalekites attacking those Israelites.  And He’s not okay with abortion.  God takes this killing innocent people stuff very seriously.

I am not a political person.  I don’t watch debates, not sure who the vice president is, don’t know anything about either of the candidates, don’t care what the health care options are, but I do know that one party is for abortion and one party isn’t.  When I go to vote this week I am going to vote for the party who is against killing innocent babies, because God is against killing innocent babies.  I don’t want their blood on my hands in any way.  I don’t want to be grouped in with people like the Amalekites.  It was 400 years after the Amalekites had attacked the innocent Israelites when God ordered Saul to utterly destroy them.  Their sin and lack of respect for God affected the generations that came after them, much like abortion affects future generations.

Now more than ever the thought of abortion hurts my heart.  These little babies are not just statistics, they are real people that God had a plan for. My son Felix was born still and weighed only 12 ounces.  But at 17 weeks God had already formed his tiny hands, tiny feet, tiny ears, tiny nose, tiny heart, and his big spirit.  I have his tiny footprints to prove it.  Felix mattered and so do all of the other unborn children in the world.  Vote for them!

  1. I got so inspired writing this blog I decided to go vote this afternoon!
  2. I was nervous I might not get to vote since I’ve yet to get my Texas license, but I was good!  Ballot cast!

Day 86

Proverbs 17:6 Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children.

This is one of my favorite family verses!  When we found out we were expecting our first child we put a hamburger bun in my in law’s oven along with a little note that had the first part of that scripture on it.  It took them a second but they finally figured out that we were trying to tell them I had a bun in the oven and that they were getting another crown.

Today I’ve been thinking about the second part of the verse.  Parents are the pride of their children.  People often refer to their children as their pride and joy, but this verse says the opposite.  Parents should be the pride and joy of their children.  If you live a life that makes your kids proud, they will live a life that makes you proud!

What a great goal.  When I leave the earth someday I want my children to be able to say that they are proud of me.  I want them to aspire to be like me and my husband.  I want them to desire to have a marriage like ours.  I want them to be great parents to their kids because we were great parents to them.

Today my father in law, Ken Blount is celebrating his 62nd birthday.  Papa, I just want you to know that you are the pride of your children.  We are so proud of the man of God that you are.  You are a great father, husband, and grandfather.  You practice what you preach.  You are running the race He’s set for you and running to win.  When we grow up we want to be just like you.  Thank you for living a life that makes us proud, we promise to do the same for you.

Day 85

Last night my 18 month old daughter had to be rushed to the emergency room.  She had been running a temperature all day but right before bed her eyes glazed over and she was unresponsive.  I called my husband in to look at her and he agreed, something was not right.  It was pretty scary for us to see her that way.

Dressed in our pajamas we all jumped into the car and headed to the closest E.R.  On the way there we were going to war with the devil!  As we were praying a verse came to my heart so I began to declare it over her.  Isaiah 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper…

That is what it felt like was happening.  A weapon was coming against our sweet little daughter.  An attack of the enemy.  When I spoke that verse it reminded me that whatever weapon was being formed against her in this moment could not and would not prosper.  No matter how scary the situation seemed, God reminded me it was just a front because no weapon formed against her could prosper!

By the time we got there she was much better.  Still running a temperature, but the doctor’s said she was fine.  Praise God!

I still had that verse on my heart when I woke up this morning and decided to chew on it some more.

The verse before it is very interesting.  Isaiah 54:16 I have created the blacksmith who fans the coals beneath the forge and makes the weapons of destruction.  And I have created the armies that destroy.

Sometimes I forget that God created the blacksmith, the one who forms the weapons.  God created Satan.  He was an angel before he was the devil.  Satan is not stronger than the one who created Him.  He never has been, never will be!

Whatever weapons he designs against you are destined to be destroyed!  The weapon the blacksmith creates “shall not prove strong enough to do any harm to the people of God; it shall miss its mark, shall fall out of the hand or perhaps recoil in the face of him that uses it against thee.” (Henry)

When you are under attack and feel like you’ve got a loaded gun pointed at you remember God’s promise, no weapon formed against you can prosper.  God can turn the bullets into marshmallows, move you out of the way before the weapon fires, or cause it to back fire on the black smith.  The black smith may be able to forge weapons, but none of them work properly because our God is greater, our God is stronger!  It’s just a front.

Isaiah 54:15 …Whoever attacks you will go down in defeat.

  1. The Holy Spirit led me to keep holding Beau last night instead of putting her down in her bed.
  2. The Holy Spirit helped me pray perfect prayers for her.

Day 84

Ephesians 4:26-27 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.

Be angry and do not sin.  Sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s not.  You can be angry without sinning.  I know this because Jesus never sinned, yet Jesus got angry.  In Mark 3:5 it says Jesus looked at the Pharisees with anger.  In Matthew 21:12-13 Jesus turned over the tables and chairs of the money changers who were taking advantage of people coming to worship at the temple.

I like that Jesus got angry.  I like that He didn’t just pat the moneychangers on the back and ask them politely to leave.  Jesus was passionate!  He loved God and the lack of respect the moneychangers had for His father angered Him.

When we found out we were going to have to deliver our son still born I felt several emotions- shock, sadness, confusion, and anger.  I remember about 30 minutes after we had him, a nurse brought in a tray of food for me to eat.  She had to make sure I could keep down food before sending me home.  I wanted to throw the scrambled eggs across the room.  I was mad!  But was I sinning?   I wasn’t mad at the doctor or the nurses.  I wasn’t mad at my husband.  I wasn’t mad at God.  I was mad at the devil and the evil thing He had done!

So yes, I was angry, but I wasn’t sinning.  It could have turned into sin had I decided I was going to let it keep me from sleeping at night.  It could have turned into sin had I started lashing out toward my family who had nothing to do with the loss.  It could have turned into sin if I let it dominate my thought life.

But it didn’t get there because I gave my anger to God.  I let Him turn the tables on the devil, like Jesus turned the tables in the temple!

Romans 12:19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.

I’m glad God made us passionate like Jesus.  I’m glad that it’s okay to be angry at sin and things that are evil.  But, I’m really glad that we don’t have to live angry.  We can give whatever makes us angry to God and let him settle it with His righteous anger.  There is a fine line between being angry and sinning.  Don’t let anger (even anger towards evil things) give the devil a room in your house.  Be angry, and do not sin.

  1. God has turned the tables on the devil for me and my family.
  2. Jesus got angry!
  3. I can be angry without sinning.
  4. Being angry is a choice.  You can choose to be angry and sin or you can choose to be angry and give it to God before it turns to sin.

  17. Had to rush Beau to the E.R. right before I was going to put her to sleep.  Her eyes were glazed over and she didn’t look good at all.  I know God healed her in the car on the way there.
  18. I had just made a mental note in my head a few days ago about where an all night E.R. was located near us and so I knew right where we needed to go.
  19. Gus stayed really calm when we had to all run out of the house in pajamas.  He didn’t even have shoes on, but God helped him be brave and he wasn’t scared for Beau at all.

  21. Gus really enjoyed laying around and watching old Spider Man episodes while Beau was getting her check up.

Day 83

The other night I read “Heaven is for Real, for Kids” to my son Gus.  It’s the true story of a four year old boys trip to heaven and back.  The things the boy saw and described totally line up with the descriptions of heaven found in the Bible, only in preschooler speak.  My favorite illustration in the book is of the throne room.  Jesus is sitting on His throne and next to him there is a huge throne and part of one leg of God, the rest of him is too big to fit onto the page.  The little boy said that in heaven God and his chair are “reaaally big.”  That got to me! Sometimes I forget how big the God that I serve really is, and that big God has me in His big hand.

This is Jesus talking in John 10:28, I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.

Jesus has us in His hand.  But check this out.  These are Jesus’ last words,

Luke 23:46 Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.

We are in the hand of Jesus and He is in the hand of God so we are in the hand of God.  We have double security.  Jesus says so himself in John 10:29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

“To be in the hand’s of God means we are under his guidance, care, and protection.  We are fed according to the integrity of his heart and guided by the skillfulness of his hands.  We are always under his care and watchful eye. He protects us from our enemies as we hide in the hollow of his hand.” (Gills)

Next time that guy with the awesome voice from All State asks, “are you in good hands?”, you can let him know you are!  No matter who wins the election you are still in good hands.  No matter what the doctor’s have diagnosed you with, you are still in good hands.  You are in the hand of Jesus, and you are in the hand of God. Psalm 95:7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.

God’s real.  He really is sitting up in heaven on His huge throne with you in the palm of His hand and NO ONE is able to snatch you out of it.

  1. God is huge.
  2. Jesus has me in His hand.
  3. God has me in His hand.

Day 82

I was running this morning and listening “Oh Your Bring” by Hillsong United, a song I’ve listened to many times, but today these words really got me thinking, and You opened the door for me.

I began to think about the tradition of gentlemen opening doors for ladies and wondering how that got started.   I found out that it probably originated in the 16th through 19th century in Europe.  During this time women were wearing those huge fancy hoop dresses, tied up in extremely uncomfortable undergarments.  It was very hard for them to move around and since all of them were dressed in the same big, restricting dresses men began to open doors for them and help them in and out of stage coaches.

It’s not quite the same today, but I do appreciate when I’m in my jeans trying to push a double stroller through a tiny door and someone helps me open it so I can get where I need to go.

All of that got me wondering what kind of doors God wants to open for me.  I mean, I know Jesus is the door, the only way of entrance into salvation, but what kind of doors does he open?

Colossians 4:3 meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains.

This verse is so inspiring to me.  Paul is in prison for speaking about the mystery of Christ, yet he is asking people to pray that God will open a door so he can have the opportunity to do more of the very thing that got him thrown in prison!

There are several other verses in the New Testament about God opening doors so his people can preach the gospel.  They were able to get into places they wouldn’t have been able to get into on their own because God opened doors for them.  The asked him to open doors because they realized without him they were like a lady in a huge restricting gown unable to move her arms.  I have felt that way before when trying to reach someone that is lost… like my hands are tied, there’s nothing I can say or do to get through to them.  Once I get to that point with a person it’s hard for me to figure out how to pray for them, but today God showed how to do that.

I can pray like Paul, I can pray that God would open a door.  I can’t do it on my own.  I’m in need of a gentlemen to help me!  I need God to open doors that only He can open so  I can share God’s love and His word with the lost, hurting, and broken people He brings across my path.

If you want more opportunities to minister to people ask God to open doors.  Think Pete Townsend like thoughts and let God’s love open the door to their heart!

Revelation 3:8 (MSG) I see what you’ve done. Now see what I’ve done. I’ve opened a door before you that no one can slam shut.

Day 81

Have you ever seen that show on A&E called Storage Wars?  It’s about people who go to auctions to bid on storage units that have been repossessed.  After so many months of missing rent payments a storage unit and all of it’s contents go up on the auction block and get sold to the highest bidder.  It’s amazing to me that there are enough abandoned storage units out there that people are able to make a career out of buying them and selling what they find inside.  One guy won on a unit for $1,300 and in it he found a bunch of newspapers printed the day that Elvis Presley died worth approximately $90,000!  Crazy!!

Psalm 31:19 (NIRV) How great your goodness is!  You have stored it up for those who have respect for you…

God has a storage unit full of His goodness that goes on forever with your name on it!  He’s been storing it for you since before you were born, but if you don’t train your eyes to see it you might miss out on some of it.  I’m sure whoever stored those newspapers had no idea how valuable they were or they wouldn’t have left them in a storage unit they didn’t care enough about to make payments on.  But the gentlemen who won the unit has trained his eyes.  He is able to look through a bunch of ordinary things and find the good stuff!

Sometimes it may feel like you have a storage unit full of just ordinary stuff instead of one full of God’s goodness, but God’s goodness is there among seemingly ordinary things.  You just have to train your eyes to see it.

One of the greatest things that has come out of my mission to be thankful for 10,000 things over 365 days is the way I see God’s goodness everyday, everywhere.  I see God’s goodness when I see my kids smile.  I see God’s goodness in a beautiful sunset.  I see God’s goodness when I open my Bible to a scripture that is just what I needed right when I needed it.  I see God’s goodness when I’m putting away the groceries, folding laundry, and eating leftovers.

Train your eye to see the invaluable goodness of God that He has stored up for you.  It’s always on display, don’t miss it.

  1. God’s goodness is great!
  2. God never runs out of goodness.
  3. God’s goodness is all around us even in the things that seem ordinary.
  4. I’m training my eyes to see God’s goodness in a whole new way.

Day 80

My husband Josh is a children’s pastor, but he’s also a very gifted song writer.  He comes by it honest.  His dad is also a very gifted song writer and has written hundreds of praise and worship songs over the last 30 years.  A few years ago they decided to work on a project together and in May of 2012 they released a kid’s praise and worship CD called “Love Out Loud.”  Yesterday they released a second kid’s praise and worship CD called “I Believe In Jesus.”  Between the two CDs they have written 20 amazing songs, full of God’s word.

We delivered our son Felix still born right around the time Josh was working on the art design for “I Believe In Jesus” and he felt moved to dedicate the album to him.  The CDs came in the mail yesterday and I opened one up to see this:

“May the sound of children singing these songs of praise and worship echo the victorious name of Jesus in the ear of the enemy.  May the shouts of young voices stir the hearts of young and old alike to a noble theme.  That all who hear may know that satan has been defeated.  Death, hell and the grave have lost, and our risen Lord and Savior, Jesus, reigns forever more!  For Felix – Our torchbearer…you mattered”

I can’t think of a sweeter way to honor Felix than that.  I love the verse that God showed Josh when he was writing his dedication.  Psalm 45:1 (NIV) My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king…

The word stirred in that verse is from the word inditing and it is the only time it’s used in the whole Bible.  It means to boil or bubble up as fountain.  To overflow.

I think it’s safe to say that my heart has been stirred.  I have 80 blogs and 2,238 reasons to prove it.  My heart is bubbling up like a fountain, boiling over, and being stirred by a noble theme- thankfulness.

Everyone’s heart is bubbling up, overflowing and being stirred by some type of theme, what is the theme of your heart?  Is it a good theme, a noble theme?   If you want your heart to be stirred by a noble theme, you have to think on noble things.  The thing that stirred the heart of the Psalmist was reciting lovely poems about the king.  Sounds a lot like worship to me.  To stir your heart start reciting the Psalms, sing praises to God, take time to thank Him everyday, and worship Him with all you’ve got.

I love thinking about Felix in heaven hearing little kids on earth singing songs his daddy and papa wrote, reciting poems about the King that He knows so well, and those songs stirring the hearts of the kids who sing them and the hearts of anyone else in ear shot.  Get to stirrin’!

  1. The awesome way Josh honored Felix with his very sweet dedication.
  2. My heart has been stirred and is being stirred by a noble theme!
  3. Felix’s life has stirred a lot of peoples hearts.  He did matter!
  4. Josh has been able to do something with the songs God has given him through Ken Blount Ministries.

  6. My favorite song out of all 20 is “Stripes and Scars”  I believe God wants to use it to help kids receive healing in their bodies, from colds to cancer and everything in between.
  7. These songs are ringing in the ears of the devil and he hates it.
  8. My cousin sent me a picture of her little girl dancing to “I Believe In Jesus”

  18. Surprised Josh at the office this afternoon.  The kids think it’s SO cool to see where dad works.
  19. Beau can say “Josh Hall” it sounds more like “Osh All” but I know what she means and it’s adorable.

  21. Played the singing instead of talking game with Gus while we picked up toys.  It felt like we were in a play… it was fun.
  22. Beau was trying to sing along with me while I was putting her down for bed.  SO SWEET!

  24. Kit Kats.  Seriously, someone needs to get all of this fall festival candy out of my sight.
  25. Got to listen to a great message from my mom and dad’s pastor, Ron Woods.  It really ministered to me.  I was “amen-ing” all the way through it from my bathtub.
  26. Got to sing my heart out and worship God while doing my hair.  I’m tellin’ ya, I had church in my bathroom tonight!
  27. Clean hair!!
  28. My niece Afton texted me out of the blue to tell me she loved me.

Day 79

Last time we were at Disney Land in California we decided to take a little rest and enjoy a Mickey Mouse ice cream sandwich before we headed to the next ride.  I can still see this moment perfectly in my head.  Where we were sitting, what color the tables were, what the weather felt like and the sweet little sparrow hoping around picking up pieces of popcorn.  We all watched him for a while and Josh and I decided that if you were going to be a bird Disney Land was the best possible place you could make your nest.

Today I read in Psalm 84 what a Psalmist, possibly David, thought was the best possible place a sparrow could make it’s nest.

Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises.

Yeah, so in the temple next to the altar definitely trumps Disney Land for the all time best places for a sparrow to live.

I love that very sweet thought.  What joy for a little bird to be able to live in God’s house, always singing his praises.  It doesn’t say what joy for the birds who get to fly over the altars, but what joy for those that make their nests there,  that live there, lay their eggs there, and raise their little sparrow chicks there praising God in His lovely dwelling place.

The writer of this Psalm is envious of the set up that these birds have.  Verse 2 says , “I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God.”

Jesus made that longing to live continually in his presence possible for us.   Ephesians 2:20-21 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.  We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.

We don’t have to live vicariously through a sparrow living in the temple.  We are the temple!  God has made His home in us so we can make our nests and raise our families in His presence, always singing His praise.

  1. Sparrows are adorable.
  2. We can live in God’s house, because He lives in us!
  3. I’m making my nest and raising my family in God’s beautiful dwelling place.
  4. Mickey Mouse ice cream sandwiches.

  6. My friend Shannon let me know that an ellipsis is always three dot dot dots… very helpful since I use them… a lot.
  7. My mom went in for a mammogram a few days ago and they saw something they didn’t like.  She went back in today and they found nothing.  God is good!

  21. Left overs for dinner night.
  22. Walking around the neighborhood and catching up with Josh while the kids ride their bikes.
  23. Got to read “Heaven Is For Real:  For Kids” to Gus tonight.  A friend gave it to me when we first lost Felix, but I haven’t read it to him until now because I didn’t think I could make it through without crying..  I got pretty choked up in a few places, but it is a beautiful book and Gus loved learning more about heaven.
  24. Awesome news from a friend!  God is faithful and his timing is perfect!
  25. Sweet time of prayer with my sweet husband.
  26. 30 for 30!  Love that show.

Day 78

One afternoon I was walking around at the zoo when all of a sudden I see a lion who has escaped from his cage just a few feet away from me.  He’s enormous.  His shoulder blades move up and down with very intimidating definition as he walks closer to me.  Everyone around me starts to scream and run for their lives.

I don’t know what happens next, because I always wake up before I get to that part.  Weird recurring dream.  I don’t think it’s spiritual.  I think I just watched “A Ghost In The Darkness” too many times growing up.  You know that Val Kilmer movie about the lions in Africa who were hunting people at night?  Goosebumps happening as I type this now.

Lions are definitely an animal you don’t want to mess with.  But I guess no one told Benaiah that. 2 Samuel 23:20 says that “…He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.”

I have read this verse before and I always thought Benaiah fell into a pit and there happened to be a lion in it and he killed it.  That would be really impressive if that was the case, but I noticed today that he didn’t fall into the pit he went into it because he wanted to kill the lion.  Some translations say he chased the lion into the pit.  It seems like he could have just left the lion alone and waited for it to starve or throw spears at it from a distance, but Benaiah didn’t make it into David’s list of mighty men for nothing.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (NIRV) Control yourselves. Be on your guard. Your enemy the devil is like a roaring lion. He prowls around looking for someone to chew up and swallow.  Stand up to him. Stand firm in what you believe…

The Bible likens the devil to a lion.  The same type of animal that Benaiah went after and killed.  He didn’t run from him, he went after him.  He didn’t wait around hoping he would starve to death, he took care of him right then and there.  He stood up to him and killed him.  As Christians we can stand up to the devil.  We don’t have to run scared of Him, He has to run scared of us.  James 4:7 says, resist or stand up against the devil and he will flee from you. The devil is evil.  Every bad thing you’ve ever seen reported on the news or recorded in the history books he was behind.  Murder, child abuse, child molestation, sex trafficking, Hitler, KKK, abortion, and every other horrible thing that’s ever happened can all be traced back to him.   But don’t let that intimidate you.  “Satan can be set running by the resistance of the lowliest believer who comes in the authority of what Jesus did on the cross.” (Guzik)

Satan is a roaring lion looking for someone to chew up and swallow, but he’s not looking for mighty men like Benaiah.   He’s hiding from them in a snowy pit.  Stand up to Him!  You have nothing to fear because of what Jesus did for you at the cross.

Hebrews 2:14 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.

Stand up to him, remind him that his power has been broken, and set him running.

  1. The enemy has been defeated!!  His power has been broken!!
  2. When we stand up against the devil he runs from us, we don’t have to run from him.
  3. When the devil sees me He doesn’t see someone he can chew up and swallow, He sees Jesus!  Jesus is alive in me!
  4. These mighty men of David have really been ministering to me the last few days.
  5. God told me in my prayer time to let Gus hear me pray over him.   I could tell it ministered to him when I laid my hands on him and spoke the word over him.
  6. Me and the kids got our flu shots today.  Thankful we won’t have to mess with that this year.
  7. Gus was much better about getting a shot today than he was last time.  He only cried because he didn’t like that me and Beau had to get shots too.
  8. We had fun looking at all of the Christmas decorations at CVS while we were waiting to make sure no one had a bad reaction to the vaccine.
